Drop The Fruit: Letting Go When Things Are Bananas

In light of Covid-19, we are pivoting our organization. Who isn’t, right?

But it’s hard because of the massive uncertainty in every possible way.

Two examples:

-Consumer habits have changed and will probably, in many ways, stay different after the pandemic is over.

-People are overwhelmed by online offerings. So even if your company is stealthy and started to offer online options, you are competing with a zillion other things.

We keep brainstorming ways to connect with our students’ families without burdening them, sometimes with lovely results and sometimes with unsatisfying results.

So here’s my new philosophy, paraphrased straight from the mouth of the Yoga tradition:

The fruits of your actions don’t belong to you. Only your own actions are yours to worry about. Oh and also: do not get addicted to inaction.

-Bhagavad Gita, verse 2.47

This is useful for those of us who are struggling to pivot a business, struggling to support our kids to do schoolwork, struggling to just get through the day without succumbing to the stressful emotions that we are all dealing with.

This is my takeaway:

  1. Set daily, meaningful goals. Don’t succumb to inaction! The world needs you!

  2. Do your very best to meet those goals.

  3. Relax your expectations. Don’t hope that anything or anyone will behave in a predictable way. Use humor, danceable music, supportive people in your community…whatever it takes to let you plant, water, and wait for your fruit… without a guarantee of a particular outcome.
